A decade without D'Angelo / Une Décennie sans D'Angelo

January 25th 2000 was the day Voodoo, D’Angelo’s sophomore album was released.I was just 15  years old.I know it must sound cheesy but I knew that I would love D'Angelo forever.

When you talk about Voodoo you talk about a debut at Number 1 at the US billboard 200 chart, a platinum album (1 700 000 records sold) , two Grammys ( Best R&B album and Bets Male Performance ) , one video which ranks #44 in VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Videos ( you see which one I’m talking about). The album was also ranked number 488 on Rolling Stone's November 2003 publication of the 500 greatest albums of all time, which made it one of only thirteen entries released in the 2000s to be included in the magazine's list. D’angelo has been considered than as a Neo Soul precursor. But some people had troubles defining the genre of Voodoo. In the album's EPK, D'Angelo said that Voodoo is "like a funk album. The natural progression of soul, the next step to soul is funk".

In my opinion, D’angelo is more than one musical genre. He’s funk, he’s soul, he can be Hip-Hop and he's definitely moret than the "naked guy" .I consider Voodoo as one of the best albums of the past decade. As much as I loved Brown sugar, Voodoo is a trip to cloud nine.D’angelo smooth voice and musical skills with the help of others artists ( Raphael Saadiq, Questlove ..)  provided us an album filled with spirituality, love, erotism (The video!!!!) but most of all a masterpiece, a gift for music lovers. Many artists have inspired themselves listening to D'Angelo sound ( even album cover yeah Trey Songz I'm looking at you)  It's been a decade now and the D'Angelo fans just like me are just waiting for the rumored ( for years now)  new D'Angelo album. 

This album was certainly one of the most important album that helped me confirm my musical preferences as I had it on repeat back in the days enjoying each melody, each whispering, each words ( when it was possible to hear them ;) ) Since Maxwell is back and Sade too, I only need Mr Brown Sugar to be back in 2010 to make this year greater.
